6 to 5 versus 3 to 2 - fractions do matter
Wednesday November, 4th 2009 by fullhouseYour elementary math teachers have gotten the last laugh, time and time again you probably told them “We are never going to use this in real life”, and time and time again they insisted you would have to use basic mathematical functions like fractions and decimals. The average to novice blackjack player barely see any difference between 6 to 5 blackjack and 3 to 2 blackjack, its basically the same fraction, right? No, it is not basically the same thing and those two little harmless fractions could cost you a lot of money in the end.
In 3 to 2 blackjack, the casino pays you a 3 to 2 bonus when you hit 21. This means that you get paid 15 dollars extra for every 10 dollars you bet. This sounds like a nice added bonus, but you need to remember that the house wins on every tie [I.E. both you and the dealer get a 17], so certain bonus must be plentiful in order to make up for this. 3 to 2 blackjack has been the industry standard in both online and offline casino’s for years and years.
Lately many casinos’ have been trying to push 6 to 5 blackjack instead of 3 to 2 blackjack. Instead of getting a 15 dollar bonus when you hit blackjack on a 10 dollar bet you only receive a 12 dollar bonus. The house edge on a 3 to 2 blackjack game can be reduced to between .2% and .5% if the player practices proper blackjack strategy, but in a 6 to 5 blackjack game the house edge sits at around 1.5% even if flawless strategy is used. If you don’t think that there is much of a difference between .2-.5% and 1.5% think about it this way, there is between a 200% and 700% increase in the house edge of a 6 to 5 blackjack table versus a 3 to 2 blackjack table when proper strategy is used.
That difference is too large and impacting to ignore, never play at a 6 to 5 blackjack table, there are too many decent, respectable blackjack tables both online and off.
