Tokyo High School Student Gambling Online
Apr 07, 2009
Recently, in Tokyo, an underage high school student was caught gambling online. Online casinos try to prevent underage players from signing up with their casinos.
The high school student managed to play in an online casino by opening his account in an adult’s name. The student had plans to place bets on various races, as well as in the online casino. He was caught when he attempted to move funds from the online casino into his own bank account, via the bank account he had used in order to sign up with the casino.
He originally signed up with the online casino by using his mother’s credit card details, and managed to accumulate 1.3 million yen since July 2007. The high school student wanted to withdraw his winnings, and bought identification for a 41 year old housewife for 17,000 yen. He had placed an advertisement on a bulletin board on the Internet that he was looking to purchase a bank account. He had also advertised to other prospective buyers that he had bank accounts to sell. The buyers were defrauded for a total of around 70,000 yen.
While this is an extreme and unusual case of underage online gambling, it highlights the importance of legalizing and regulating online gambling all over the world. Japan is in the process of doing this as they are trying to create a safe and reliable place for their citizens to be able to enjoy online gambling, without the risk of being caught by scams.
