Land-Based Casinos Decline While Online Casinos Hold Steady

Either the global financial crisis, or perhaps the summer months, when leisure-seekers pursue outdoor activities, have negatively affected the number of players gambling at land-based casinos.

In July, land-based casinos in Las Vegas in the United States had a fall of 17%, and still seem to be on their way down. At the same time, revenue at online casinos has held steady, and in some instances has even been reported as rising slightly.

It is understood that fewer people will travel far to land-based casinos, such as in Las Vegas, since the travel costs have become prohibitive for those with lower incomes, as well as the general costs of a vacation, such as food and hotels. Some land-based casinos have tried to offer incentives, where players can almost have their rooms for free, but this still has not brought the players back.

Online casinos, on the other hand, also offer incentives to players in the form of bonuses and free tournaments. The online casino world is hoping to tap into the land-based casino market, by attracting new players who, until recently, had preferred to play offline.

It is unclear at this time whether more of the land-based gamblers will switch to only online gambling, or whether they will simply cease to gamble at this time. Should these gamblers switch to online gambling in large numbers, it is likely that online gambling revenues will be up, which will further affect the land-based casino industry.
