Owner Banned by Horseracing Authority

The governing body for horseracing in the United Kingdom, the British Horseracing Authority has disqualified Leighton Brookes, a registered horse owner. The horse owner was placing wagers on his own horses, which in normal circumstances, would be okay, however, he was placing wagers for them to lose.

The disciplinary panel from the British Horseracing Authority has decided that the racehorse owner should serve a three-year ban since he has now profited from betting on the defeat of two of his horses on four separate occasions.

While the investigation into Brookes’ controversial bets on his own horses was taking place, he states that he had not placed the wagers in question. As explanation as to how the bets appeared on his Betfair account, he admitted that he had shared the account with a friend, implying that the friend had, in fact, placed the controversial wagers.

Although the horse owner said that he had not placed the wagers, he did not attend the hearing at the British Horseracing Authority, and also refused to have his telephone records scrutinized by the Authority.

The racehorse owner may find that even after his three-year ban, he will not be allowed to return to racehorse ownership, since a new regulation that is likely to be instituted by the Authority states that those owners who can not be considered as ‘fit and proper person’ may be excluded from owning racehorses.

The British Horseracing Authority states that the amount of profit made after placing a bet with Betfair received a win of £609.
