Retired Ashville Fire Department Worker Wins Powerball Millions
Feb 09, 2010
Frank Griffin, of Asheville, bought gas, and chose to purchase some lottery tickets with his $5 change. He left the computer pick the numbers for him, and won the Powerball jackpot of $141 million.
Griffin, a retired firefighter, with more than 20 years of service claimed his prize in Raleigh on Monday afternoon. He and his wife of 45 years, Loretta, plan to spend more time together. Griffin said “I may get us a new house later, but I really want to spend more time with her and my grandchildren.”
Griffin plans to travel to Hawaii with his wife, and use the money to help take care of his family. He plans to use part of the money to help his Ashville church, Crossroads Assembly, and also has plans to play a lot more golf then he had before winning.
As the sole winner of the $141 million Powerball jackpot, Griffin had the choice to receive the total amount as an annuity, or to take a lump sum payment of $69 million. He chose the $69 million, which will come out to around $47 million after both state and federal taxes have been paid.
When Griffin purchased the winning lottery ticket, his friend, Larry, said “You ain’t going to win that.” On Sunday, Larry told Griffin that he had heard that the $141 Powerball jackpot had been won by someone in Ashville. Griffin looked at his friend and smiled. Larry asked “What are you smiling about?” Griffin replied “Because I won it.”
