UK Moms Choose Online Gambling as Entertainment Choice
Feb 14, 2010
A recent survey in the United Kingdom showed that many are choosing online casinos over other forms of entertainment. For example, the study revealed that more than 8 out of 10 stay-at-home mothers chose to use the Internet rather than to watch television.
The survey noted that these stay-at-home moms chose to go online at least once every day in order to shop, check out the news, to socialize with their friends, and also to play at online casinos.
The pollster, Winmonkey, also found that nearly 25 percent of these stay-at-home moms would spend at least a portion of their Internet time each day being involved in online gambling in some way. The time spent involved with online gambling was a portion of their two or more hours spent online.
A survey by Yahoo! also revealed that two out of three mothers that were surveyed used the Internet as one of their first sources of information, noting again that daytime television is becoming less popular.
While many feel that this is harmless, others do issue somewhat of a warning about Internet or online gambling addiction, warning mothers that they should ensure that their Internet use does not cause them to neglect other important duties.
Siobahn Freegard from Netmums explained to the Sun: “As with all things, it is about balance. If mums are finding they are spending too long online, or a bit of bingo is turning into more serious gambling, it’s worth considering whether they are becoming addicted to the Internet and may well want to talk to someone or seek advice on that.”
