DRAW POKER
How to play draw poker is easy to learn and takes a life time to master. The game is played at a poker table that will seat 6 to 8 players at one time. Each player is dealt five cards face down. There is then a round of betting. Those people who called all of the bets or are all in, are then asked how many cards they wish to replace. Most players take one to three cards. There is then another round of betting. When the betting is finished, those that called are obliged to show their hands. The player with the best poker hand is the winner and takes down the pot.
Whether a player will play or not depends on what cards they hold in the five cards they have been dealt. Whether they call the bets and then draw or not is all about could a draw improve the hand or not. If the hand is improved, the player will then stay to the end of the betting in hopes that they have the winning hand. When to fold and what to draw too takes experience, knowledge of the drawing odds and the amount of bets needed to be met in order to get to draw. If a player holds three cards of the same suit, it may be worthwhile to draw if at least one of the cards is also a high card. The player has a chance to make a high pair and also the chance to make a flush. The amount bet before the draw will also help in making the player’s mind up on whether to call and make the draw.
Some players will take only two cards when they could take three in order to make the other players think they may have three suited cards, three connected cards or trips. This small deception when also done with a raising bet will help to carry out the deception. Making a hand seem better than it merits, is part of the skill needed to play winning poker. The best hand dealt is not always going to win the pot. A well-played bluff can take the pot away from the better hand. The higher the stakes, the more likely there will be bluffing in the game. The reason is that higher stakes attract better players. Better players are willing to bluff for to reasons. If they get caught bluffing they have sold the table that they are willing to bluff. This could mean more calls later in the evening when they are playing a really good hand. If they do not get caught, they build up their chip stack and have more ammunition later to bet.
Draw poker became very popular during the Civil War and was taken home to the soldier’s hometowns when the war ended. Some states outlawed all gambling except draw poker as it was considered a game of skill. This helped it replace Stud as the game of choice as Stud was considered a game of luck and draw poker took skill to play better. Professional gamblers liked it better too, as they could get more bets in the game by having the draw after the initial deal. The riverboat gamblers also made it the game of choice on the Mississippi. The river city casinos and local businessmen took it up for their Saturday night games. When the gold rush hit the country and California became a magnet for all types of gambling, the poker game of choice became draw poker. Draw poker is still popular, but now the game of choice is Texas Hold’em.
