OMAHA HI / LO

Omaha Hi Lo is a game which is now very popular both live and online. There are two aspects to this game as there are two pots to be won – The high hand and the low hand!

The game begins with the two players to the left of the dealer posting the small and big blinds; these are compulsory bets and ensure there is always money to be won in every hand. Each player is dealt 4 cards face down and as in all poker games action moves in a clockwise direction. Betting is either fixed limit, pot limit or no limit so make sure you know which kind of table you have joined.

Betting is the same as Texas Hold’em and Omaha high in that there is a betting round followed by the flop being dealt, this is the first of five cards dealt face up on to the table which can be used by all players to make their best high and lo hands. The cards dealt in to the middle after the flop are the turn and river which totals five cards which all players can use exactly 3 of plus 2 of their own cards to make their best High and Lo Hand. You can use different cards for you high and lo high as long as you use exactly two for each.

Betting rounds are before the flop, after the flop, after the turn and finally after the river card is dealt.

For a low hand to qualify it must be under 8 high, straights and flushes do not count towards the lo hand, the best being Ace-2-3-4-5.

Example hand:

Your cards: Ace – Ace – 2 – 4

Community cards: Ace – 3 – 6 – 10

Your best high hand is: Ace – Ace – Ace – 10 – 6 as you use your two Aces and the Ace – 10 - 6 from the board to make this hand three of a kind aka a set.

Your best lo hand is: Ace – 2 – 3 – 6 you used the 2-4 from your own hand and the Ace – 3 - 6 from the community cards to make this hand which qualifies as it is 8 high or lower.

At the showdown the player or players with the highest hand win half the pot for having the highest hand while the player or players with the lowest hand take the other half of the total pot for having the lo hand. If no lo hand qualifies the whole pot goes to the highest hand.

It is possible and quite regular for both the high and lo pots to be split multiple ways as players have the same hands on many occasions.
