OMAHA POKER
There are two versions of Omaha poker. One is high only and the other is Hi Low.
Both games are nine cards per hand games. Each player is dealt four cards and then there is a round of betting. Three cards are then turned face up in the center of the table and these cards are common to all hands. There is then a round of betting. A fourth card is turned face up in the common cards and another round of betting takes place. A fifth card is turned face up in the common cards and another round of bets takes place. The player must use two cards from their hand and three from the common cards to make the best high hand. If the game is Omaha Hi Low, the low hand is made the same way as the high hand. The winning player for Low must use two cards from their hand and three from the common five cards. The common cards are called the Flop. The Low hand must be eight or less and not contain any like cards. The cards however can be a straight or a flush. If the winning hand is eight or less and the same player has the best high hand, the hand is called a scooper. This can easily happen in Omaha as the low hand could be a straight or flush also. The winning high hand is usually at least two pair or better.
Omaha Hi Low is a game that has huge pots as the players can be playing for either the best high hand or best low hand. Some times, however, the players are gambling that a final card will come that will make the low hand. When it misses, the low hand is not made and the high hand gets the entire pot since there is no qualifying low hand. The other play is one player has both a made high hand and also gets the best low hand possible and is guaranteed a scooper or at least all of the high pot and splits the low pot with another player. A player in that position will raise the pot any time they can. The high hand is the best side to play for, as it is not likely to be tied. Two or more players often tie for the low hand.
There are some basic truths to Omaha. When there is a pair on the board, there is very likely at least trips and more likely a full house. If there are three suited cards there is likely to be a flush. A player should always raise when they think they have a lock on the high. The best low hand should only raise when they feel they are the only low. Splitting the low pot is common in Omaha. Be careful about two pair hands and trip hands as they can easily end up being second best. Only raise on the high in when you feel you have a lock. Some players will never raise until the last common card is dealt. Others go crazy, when they have a flush early or a straight, only to lose to a better hand when a caller gets their card on the river. High value high hands are common in Omaha as each player has nine cards to make a hand. Raising with the ace deuce is an amateur mistake as it tips the others to you having ace deuce and you can easily be tied or counterfeited. A counterfeit card is one that matches what you already hold. Experienced Omaha players have a big advantage over new Omaha players, as they know that good hands can turn into losers easily in Omaha.
