5 CARD STUD

A very traditional game of poker known throughout the World is 5 Card Stud. Play begins with each player committing an ante t the pot to get the game of to a good start. Each player is dealt 2 cards the first being a “hole card” and face down the second being dealt face up for all players to see. The player with the lowest showing card has to place the first bet which is can be either half the small bet or a full small bet whichever they decide. All players follow and can raise, call or fold their hands in turn. 5 Card Stud is a limit poker game meaning the amount you can bet or raise is fixed, 3 raises per round is the maximum.

The next card is dealt face up to each player in turn, now giving all players 1 card face down and 2 cards face up, from this point the player showing the highest card/cards is the first to act but now has the option to check rather than be forced to bring in. After this betting round we now move to 4th street where every player is dealt their 4th card again face up. This is the start of the big betting rounds where as the previous rounds the bets were smaller now the minimum bet is doubled.

Betting example: $2/$4 game ante $1. Bring in bet $1 minimum $2 maximum, Rounds 1, 2 and 3 the bet or raise is $2. The big bets from 4th street until the completion of the hand are now $4 and raises are made in $4 increments i.e. $4, $8, $12.

The river card or 5th street is dealt to all players face down and action begins from the highest hand on show, once this round of betting is completed a show down commences and the player with the highest 5 card poker wins the pot.

This is a very easy game to learn and fun to play, not as popular now as it once was due to the explosion of Texas Hold’em but you can easily find 5 card stud games available online to enjoy.
