STUD POKER
Stud poker was the game of choice in poker until the Civil War and then draw poker took over. Stud poker was also looked upon as a game of chance where draw poker was considered a game of skill. The reason for this supposed distinction is that in stud the cards are dealt and the best hand wins in theory. What this does not take into consideration is the play and betting skill of a very good player. A player who is willing to bluff and bet large amounts on a bluff is hard to defeat in any poker game. However in Stud poker the hands are rather easy to read and the best hand is usually figured out before it is turned over. However a player can bluff the game by raising and representing a hand that could be in play. It the other player cannot beat the represented hand, they may fold. The play is as follows; the dealer gives each player an up card and a down card. There is then a round of betting. Three more cards are dealt face up to each player one at a time, followed by a round of betting. The hands consist of one down card and four up cards after the last card is dealt. A player with a high pair is in a strong winning position if the other player does not have a pair showing or a possible flush or straight. Hands are represented through the betting even though the player may not have any where near the hand that he is trying to get the other player to believe that he has. A high pair or trips are big hands in 5-card Stud.
If the first two cards dealt to a player are a pair or two high cards the hand is worth a play as long as the other players do not match or beat your cards. The play from this point on depends on the cards that are dealt and how the other players bet their hands. A small raise could be helpful in letting the better know where they are in this hand. A reraise should be considered dangerous if the betting player has a pair showing or a higher card than any you have. If you have no pair then it may be time to fold.
Higher-ranking hands can show in this game of poker, but they are not as likely since each hand only has five cards to make the hand. One high pair, two pair or trips are very possible hands in 5-card stud. This is the game that is famous from the movie “Cincinnati Kid”. Of course in that movie the two players end up with a full house and a straight flush on the final hand. The odds of that happening in real life are astronomical.
Texas Holdem has replaced stud in popularity. Although in most casinos you can find stud dealt if only on the weekends. Some online casinos will offer the game, but usually at low limits or very high limits. If you enjoy a fast paced game stud is the game for you. It does not take long to play each hand, so you will get a lot of action is a short amount of time. If you are trying to work off a bonus on an online casino, this may be the game to do it in. You can sit back and wait for the holy city and get credit for playing many hands. Besides stud is a fun poker game to pass the time with and relive the old west.
