EUCHRE

Euchre is a skill based card game played with 2 teams or partnerships made up of 2 players on each team. Usually it’s played with 25 cards all the Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, Tens and Nines plus a Joker. Sometimes you will come across other variations where more or less cards are used but the basic principles are same.

The aim of Euchre is to be the first partnership to score 10 points and claiming the victory, Aces are the highest in value with the exception of the Jack in the trump suit known as the right bowler and a jack of the colour known as the left bowler.

Five cards are dealt to each player. The remaining cards are placed face down in the middle of the table. The top card is turned face up and the suit of that card is the trump suit.

The player to the left of the dealer is first to act playing any card from his hand. However if someone has chosen to “go alone”, the player to that person's left goes first. If two players have decided to go alone, the player on the team that did not choose the trump goes first.

Players must play the suit of the card lead when possible. If they cannot, they can play any card in their hand.
The highest card played in the suit which lead out wins the trick, unless one or more trump cards were played, if this is the case the highest trump card wins the trick.
The player who wins that trick starts the next trick and so on.

If four players are in a hand, the makers score 1 point for taking three tricks. They score 2 bonus points for taking all five possible tricks. If the makers fail to take three tricks, they are "euchred" and the defenders score 2 points.
If a maker chooses to go alone and wins all five tricks his partnership scores 4 points. If he wins three or four tricks his partnership scores only 1 point.
If a defender decides to go alone and wins three or four tricks his partnership scores 2 points. If the defender manages to wins all five tricks his partnership then scores 4 points.

This game although intriguing and slightly complex to explain is exceptionally good, by simply taking part you will learn the rules much faster. It is quite simple and a basic attack or defend game where you and your partner try to win the tricks by laying cards of a higher value in the same suit as the lead card or by trumping the trick.
