GIN RUMMY

Gin Rummy is without doubt the most popular variety of the game available and a large online community of Gin Rummy players are in evidence. Played a long the same lines as Traditional rummy but with the additional Gin and Knocking factors.

The object of the game is to create "melds" in sets i.e. 444 or sequences known as a Run 7, 8, 9 sets and runs made up of 3 and 4 cards are to place on the table with the aim of running out of cards upon "melding" aka “Going Gin”, or being able to meld and discard with 10 or less points remaining in your hand which is called knocking. Each card has a value an ace being 1 a 2 is worth 2 a 3 worth 3 and so on, all picture/face cards are worth 10.

Players start with 10 cards each and will draw and discard in turn, drawing cards from the face down “stock pile”. The game is played with a standard 52 card pack, usually played with between 2 and 4 players although online it seems Gin Rummy is often only available as a 2 players version.

Gin Rummy Extras

Lay off: If a player knocks, the other player or players may lay off.  Laying off means to start laying Melds onto the table or adding appropriate cards to Melds already laid.

Deadwood: The cards that are left in a player’s hand after Melding are known as Deadwood, if a player’s Deadwood totals 10 points or less, he or she can Knock (see below)

Knock: A player knocks by placing his or her deadwood on the discard pile. This signifies the end of a hand and the points are added up. When a player knock the other player can Lay off their own melds, as well as placing cards on to melds already laid by others on the table.

Going Gin: If a player is able to meld and run completely out of cards, this is Going Gin, layoffs are allowed.
